Manchester City’s talented striker Erling Haaland has highlighted what he sees as the main predicament facing modern football. According to him, the abundance of matches being played is detrimental to their overall quality, leading to a noticeable decline in the standard. Haaland’s astute observation highlights the urgent need for a reassessment of fixture congestion in order to preserve the essence and excellence of the beautiful game.
"The problem is not the number of games played, but the quality of them. The quality is deteriorating. It is not realistic to expect me to sprint a kilometre in every 70 games. What am I supposed to do? I can only follow the match schedule. That's how the business works," Haaland said, as quoted by VG.
During the current season, Haaland has made 34 appearances in all competitions for Manchester City, scoring 29 goals and providing six assists. The player's contract with the club runs until the end of June 2027. According to Transfermarkt, the footballer's estimated value is €180 million.
